Keith Kwek, creator and owner of RDGdolls appraoched me with the idea of repainting one of their production dolls, Lucien. He sent me photos and I loved the doll immediately. So this is, in effect, a collaboration between myself and RDGdolls.

Well, this doll repaint project is a first for me - on three different levels - one, this is my very first ever repaint of a male resin ball jointed doll; two, this is my first repaint ever of a doll with inset acrylic eyes as opposed to factory painted eyes; and three, this is the first time I paint-enhance a doll with sculpted genitalia. The third one was a little weird for me to do in the beginning, but as an artist, I am always open to trying something new and fresh. So overall, this project was really fun to undertake.

Lucien doll is approximately 17 1/2 inches tall similar in size to the male Tonner dolls I usually repaint. This doll has remarkably life-like poseability. Also, this doll, as most resin dolls are, is wigged and can therefore have more flexibility as far as hair styles by just changing wigs.

As I always do, I start out by completely removing original factory paint. I then completely repaint the entire facial area using a subtle mixture of colors to replicate skin tones. The repaint is not based on any particular celebrity, although he was very very loosely inspired by some of Christian Bale's features.

Also, this doll's scalp was completely bare, so I hand painted the hair, so that the doll would look just as appealing even without wearing a wig.

In addition, and for added realism, the doll's sculpted genital area has been enhanced by carefully and delicately hand painting it (thank God for those anatomy lessons I took back in college!!).

Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.
