Another one of my character doll repaints. Again, I used a 16-inch Robert Tonner doll here. I completely removed factory facial painting and repainted it by hand to resemble Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Also, the doll started out having very short rooted hair. So I completely removed each plug of hair and rerooted the entire head with longer hair in lightly varying shades. His braided beard has also been hand-rooted, with the rest of his facial hair being handpainted. It was very laborious to style Jack Sparrow's hair, with all the braids and dreadlocks - not to mention finding hair ornaments to closely match the character's. The whole prcess was a bit time-consuming.
Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise. This doll was commissioned by one of my customers who is a big Johnny Depp fan.
