This celebrity doll repaint is inspired by Edi Gathegi's character, Laurent, leader of the nomadic trio of vampires from the movie Twilight.
I used a mass produced 17-inch Laurent doll by Robert Tonner Doll company. Again, typical of mass manufacture dolls, this one needed to be precision repainted to bring out the essence of the character.
Factory paint completely removed and fully repainted with utmost accuracy and attention to subtle details.
The hair underwent extensive reworking restyling to replicate Laurent's dreadlocks. Last, I hand painted delicate lines of hair along the hairline to soften the overall look.
The inset photo on the top right shows the mass produced version of the Laurent doll as it was originally factory painted.
Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area and an even greater challenge of recreating a real person's likeness. Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.
