This celebrity doll repaint was inspired by the British actor Robert Pattinson in his portrayal of the tortured and anguished vampire Edward Cullen from the phenomenally successful film Twilight based upon the Stephanie Meyer novel.

I used a 17-inch Edward Cullen doll produced by Robert Tonner Doll company. As is usually the case with mass produced dolls depicting celebrities, the sculpt is spot on but the doll suffers in the facial paint department, which is as crucial a process in capturing likeness.

So, the first order of business was to completely remove factory facial painting. I then hand painted it to bring the likeness of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen to life, paying careful attention to capture his sense of angst.
The hair underwent extensive and meticulous restyling to replicate Edward's hair style. Last, I handpainted delicate lines of hair along the hairline to soften the overall look. Sideburns were sculpted and more accurately hand repainted as well.

The inset photo on the lower right hand corner shows the mass produced version of the Edward Cullen doll as it was originally released.

Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area and an even greater challenge of recreating a real person's likeness. Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.

It's almost creepy how spot on your repaint looks. If it was just a face shot I think most people (self included) would be hard pressed to say if that was a pic of the real Rob or not. The texture of his skin is especially nice-great job all around-looking forward to seeing your other works ^_^
