This celebrity doll repaint was inspired by silver screen legend Joan Crawford particularly as she looked from her much acclaimed winning portrayal in the 1945 classic "Mildred Pierce".
I used a 16-inch basic Joan Crawford doll here produced by Robert Tonner Doll company. As with most mass produced celebrity-inspired dolls, the facial sculpt is spot on, but the facial painting just leaves much to be desired (please refer to the "before" photo on the bottom right).
I completely removed factory facial painting and hand painted it to more faithfully replicate Joan Crawford's features and make up style from that particular period of her career.
Also, the doll's hair has been completely and painstakingly restyled just as in the movie.
Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.
