This celebrity doll repaint was inspired by my ultimate favorite silver screen legend Bette Davis as she appeared in the very early stages of her career.
I used a 16-inch factory produced Bette Davis by Robert Tonner Doll company. As with most mass produced celebrity-inspired dolls, the facial sculpt is spot on, but the facial painting just leaves much to be desired (please refer to the "before" photo on the bottom middle).
I completely removed factory facial painting and hand painted it to more faithfully replicate young Bette Davis's features, particularly the iconic bulging eyes.
Also, the doll's hair has been completely and painstakingly restyled to duplicate one of her popular early hair styles.
Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.
-- acrylic paint and ultra fine brushes
(Note: I am not in any way affiliated with the Tonner Doll company)
